Call of Duty Live-Action Movie in Works at Paramount Pictures

Paramount Pictures, the studio behind the Sonic and Mission Impossible franchises, has officially started work on a live-action movie adaptation of Call of Duty.

With the project still in its early stages, details about the cast, storyline, and release timeline remain under wraps.

Call of Duty Movie: A Perfect IP to Adapt

Only outsold by Tetris and Mario, Call of Duty is the third best-selling video game franchise of all time. Its latest installment, Black Ops 6, drew an impressive 33.7 million active players in its first month alone.

What makes Call of Duty such a compelling property to adapt is the sheer scope of its lore. Across 23 titles, the franchise has explored World War II, the Cold War, modern-day conflicts, and even near-future warfare. This gives Paramount a massive sandbox to work with, and the potential to build a sprawling interconnected universe.

Is Paramount Pictures Ready?

If any studio is prepared to handle a military action IP, it’s Paramount. With projects like Top Gun: Maverick and Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning, they’ve proven they can deliver high-octane, large-scale action.

They’ve also earned credibility in the game adaptation space, successfully bringing Sonic the Hedgehog and Dungeons & Dragons to the big screen.

In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount CEO David Ellison said:

Ellison also spoke about his personal love for the games—a small detail, but one that raises hopes for a faithful adaptation.

Video Game Adaptations – Hollywood’s Latest Obsession

With the recent success of Sonic, The Witcher, and The Last of Us, Hollywood is doubling down on video game IPs. Projects based on Elden Ring, Ghost of Tsushima, Helldivers, Metal Gear Solid, Death Stranding, and now Call of Duty are all in development.

This wave of adaptations reflects gaming’s growing cultural footprint. While skepticism remains, these projects continue to introduce massive new audiences to the medium—making games the next big source material alongside comics and novels.
