Counter-Strike 2 Latest Anniversary Update was Disappointing
Last week, on September 29, Counter-Strike 2 completed two years since its release. While there was no celebratory post by Valve, the community hoped for a big update. But the October 2 update turned out to be disappointing.
Especially if you have been keeping up with the rumors and leaks, the update felt underwhelming. Was it all bad? No—there were some interesting updates and tweaks, but none significant enough to be called a big anniversary update.
What’s Great and What’s Not?
For starters, the rotation of community maps is a good practice. It allows casual players to interact with new maps and gives map makers a chance to showcase their work. It also incentivizes creators to keep building unique maps for the rest of the community to enjoy.
If you enjoy community maps, you also get exposed to the Workshop, which features some of the most creative maps and modes.
On a similar note, there are a lot of updates to map scripting. Valve, uncharacteristically, has been listening to map makers and adding useful functionality to scripting.
Gameplay-wise, the sniper scope inaccuracy change is an interesting addition. The rest are fine, but nothing to write home about. And aside from the new community charms, that’s essentially it.
That was the update we got for the 2-year anniversary: no new mode, no anti-cheat update, no Cobblestone, no Animgraph 2.0—nothing major. (Except they did remove “Major” stickers.)
Why is it Disappointing?
As mentioned earlier, the community expected a substantial update for the anniversary. After the recent trend of improvements, expectations were high.
To be fair, the update was big—but not for the everyday player. It was big for the skin market and the map makers. For the rest of the community, who just play the game daily, there was nothing new to engage with.
Sure, four new maps are great, but they are still community maps and not Valve’s own releases. No mention of Cobble or Cache or news of their inclusion into the game.
Moreover, there hasn’t been a new game mode since Arms Race in February 2024. The long-rumored fan-favorite Retake mode still hasn’t been released either.
And if you don’t have an active community in your region, you’re stuck in the competitive/premier loop—and with the rampant cheater problem, that isn’t fun either (not addressed either.)
Smaller features like clan tags and cl_bob still haven’t made their way into CS2 despite being demanded by the community constantly. The community server browser is broken too.
There were no improvements to subtick, game mechanics or optimisation. Instead, what we got is the community’s passion on display, while Valve’s own passion feels absent.
Valve doesn't work on Counter-Strike?
By no means are we suggesting Valve isn’t working on Counter-Strike 2, 2025 has been a solid year for updates. There have been massive improvements to how the game feels, AnimGraph 2.0 was a welcome change.
But the game is due a new mode, the new mission system is underwhelming and there are no fun aspect to the game. And compared to the money Valve makes from the game, the anniversary update feels—and will continue to feel—disappointing.
