The International Olympic Committee has officially confirmed that the inaugural Olympic Esports Games will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in 2027. The announcement comes almost one year after the 142nd IOC Session took place in Paris on July 2024, where members unanimously voted to create this new Olympic competition.

IOC Decision and Timeline

The IOC made history when it decided to create the Olympic Esports Games during its session held alongside the 2024 Paris Olympics. Initially planned for 2025, the event was postponed to 2027 to allow for adequate preparation time and ensure a proper "wow effect," according to IOC President Thomas Bach. The "Road to the Games" qualification process will begin this year, with the first Olympic competitions starting in 2025.

Saudi Arabia and Esports World Cup Partnership

The IOC has established a 12-year partnership with the Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee (SOPC), giving Saudi Arabia hosting rights through 2037. This marks the first formal commercial deal between the IOC and Saudi Arabia. The partnership aligns with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 initiative, which aims to diversify the Kingdom's economy and establish it as a global hub for sports and entertainment.

A key component of the Olympic Esports Games is the partnership with the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF), which serves as the founding partner. The EWCF brings expertise in game selection, tournament structure, and ecosystem engagement to help develop the Olympic Esports Games. The foundation has already demonstrated its capabilities by organizing the Esports World Cup 2024 in Riyadh, which featured over $60 million in prize money and attracted 1,500 elite players from more than 80 countries.

The EWCF also runs a $20 million Club Partner Program that supports 40 esports organizations worldwide, providing up to $1 million in funding to each club to expand their brands and global audience.

Game Selection, Format, and National Teams

Unlike traditional Olympic Games that award medals, the Olympic Esports Games will present winners with gold, silver, and bronze-colored trophies. The specific games to be featured remain undetermined, with a six-person committee co-chaired by IOC member Ser Miang Ng and Saudi sports minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal working to select the program.

The IOC has historically avoided games that portray violence, leading to concerns that popular esports titles like Counter-Strike, League of Legends, and VALORANT may be excluded in favor of sports simulation games. However, the partnership with the EWCF suggests a more inclusive approach may be adopted.

The Olympic Esports Games will emphasize national representation, with athletes competing under their country's flags rather than for commercial teams. This differs from traditional esports where players typically represent sponsored organizations. The qualification format will create pathways for national teams to earn their place in the competition.

Organizational Structure

The Olympic Esports Games will operate independently from traditional Olympic Games, both organizationally and financially. The IOC has created a dedicated structure within the organization specifically for these games, separate from the traditional Olympic model. This independence allows for specialized approaches to digital competition while maintaining Olympic values.

This "Olympic recognition" aims to legitimize esports on an international stage and accelerate investment in gaming infrastructure globally. The esports industry is valued at over $1.22 billion in 2023 and projected to exceed $11.94 billion by 2030. For Saudi Arabia, hosting the event supports economic diversification goals, with the Kingdom's gaming market projected to reach $6.8 billion by 2030.

Qualification Process

The EWCF will collaborate with the IOC to establish qualification pathways and align national esports ecosystems with global Olympic standards. The qualification process will begin in 2025, providing a two-year pathway for national teams to compete for Olympic recognition.

This historic development represents the IOC's commitment to engaging younger audiences and adapting to digital transformation. The Olympic Esports Games should prove to be an important milestone in competitive gaming, potentially reshaping esports perception globally and creating new opportunities for digital athletes to compete on the world's biggest sporting stage.

Ready to Cheer for Your Country at the Esports Olympics?

The confirmation of the Olympic Esports Games in Riyadh 2027 signals a leap forward for both the Olympic Movement and the competitive gaming industry. By officially recognizing esports as part of its global platform, the IOC is embracing changing audience dynamics and technological innovation to stay relevant in the 21st century. This event will not only provide digital athletes with a prestigious international stage but also encourage greater investment, development, and regulation within esports around the world.

While challenges remain, such as finalizing game selections, addressing cultural differences, and ensuring inclusivity, the Olympic Esports Games represent a promising step toward bridging traditional sports with emerging digital competition. As preparations continue, this inaugural event in Saudi Arabia has the potential to redefine what it means to be an athlete and broaden the horizons of global sport for future generations.
