Erik “Maverick” Thorn is one of the most distinctive Attackers in Rainbow Six Siege. Known for his quiet precision and intelligence, he joined the game during Operation Grim Sky alongside Clash. Maverick’s story and gameplay design highlight his sharp mind, adaptability, and unmatched skill in breaching reinforced surfaces without alerting defenders.

Biography of Erik “Maverick” Thorn

Early Life and Military Background

Maverick was born in Boston and grew up in a multilingual home. From a young age, he displayed exceptional intelligence, ranking in the top two percent of his class. His parents were caring but overly protective, restricting his freedom and curiosity about the world. Seeking independence and adventure, he enlisted in the U.S. Army after high school.

While serving, he learned Dari and became an Intelligence Officer stationed in Kabul. During the War in Afghanistan, he took part in operations such as Cobra’s Anger and Moshtarak. Outside of his military duties, he became well known among locals for his love of Buzkashi, a traditional Central Asian sport.

Service and Disappearance

Maverick was later recruited into the Unit as a regional specialist. His work involved building intelligence networks, maintaining safe houses, and tracking enemy movements. When Kabul’s situation worsened, he dedicated himself to helping Americans and locals escape danger.

While investigating the disappearance of a reporter, Maverick lost contact with his unit. He remained missing for two years until Nøkk discovered him alive. Upon his return, he brought valuable intelligence that dismantled a major insurgent operation. His mysterious disappearance led to questions, but he was cleared of suspicion, and his reports were classified.

Joining Rainbow and Ghosteyes

His successful missions caught the attention of Six, who recruited him into Rainbow. After the Nighthaven defection in 2022, Rainbow reorganized into specialized squads. Maverick joined Ghosteyes, a team led by Caveira, focused on infiltration, surveillance, and elimination.

During a late 2022 operation, he worked with Caveira, Zero (Sam Fisher), Solis, Zofia, and Mozzie against the weapons manufacturer Sunset R&D.

Psychological Profile

Maverick’s psychological evaluation reveals a man of depth and intelligence. Colleagues describe him as a “spook who went native,” reflecting how deeply he connected with Afghanistan’s people and culture.

He is observant, empathetic, and analytical—traits that made him invaluable in intelligence work. Despite his social distance, people naturally confide in him. His early life taught him to compartmentalize emotions, and he continues to internalize his experiences.

Kabul left a lasting mark on him. Even though he serves with Rainbow now, his heart remains tied to Afghanistan. His tattoo, a map of the region, serves as a constant reminder of that period in his life.

The Exothermic-S “Suri” Torch

Device Overview

Maverick’s Exothermic-S Torch allows him to burn through reinforced walls and hatches quietly. The torch produces a controlled jet of flame that can cut through nearly any surface, creating sightlines or entry points without drawing much attention.

Each of his six fuel tanks provides five seconds of flame. He must reload after each tank, but leftover fuel is lost in the process. Because Maverick must holster his weapon to use the torch, timing and cover are essential.

The flame damages Operators and Hostages it touches, dealing 5 damage every quarter of a second. The torch can also destroy bulletproof gadgets such as:

  • Barbed Wire

  • Deployable Shields

  • Maestro’s Evil Eyes

  • Goyo’s Volcan Shields

  • Melusi’s Banshees

Mute’s Signal Disruptors, Bandit’s Shock Wires, and Kaid’s Electroclaws do not stop the torch, though Maverick can still be shocked if he gets too close to electrified surfaces.

Device Notes

Thermite once noted that Maverick’s prototype torch was already impressive before being refined. Maverick called it “Suri,” meaning “red” in Dari, and even incorporated a tank he brought back from Afghanistan into its design. Its low sound output and focused heat make it a practical breaching tool for stealth operations.

Strategies for Using Maverick

Maverick’s strength lies in precision. Creating a large entry hole takes time and fuel, so efficiency is key. Small circular holes are ideal for new sightlines, while a series of lines near the top and bottom of a reinforced wall can break the anchors, leaving it unreinforced for teammates to breach.

Working with teammates who provide cover, such as those using Smoke Grenades, can help Maverick operate safely. He can also weaken hatches by cutting along the edges rather than burning the same spot repeatedly.

Maverick can also deal with Mira’s Black Mirrors by burning the anchors from the defender side or exposing the gas canister beneath to destroy it.

Synergies

  • Blackbeard and Glaz benefit from Maverick’s holes for long-range engagement.

  • IQ helps by identifying gadgets behind reinforced surfaces so Maverick can cut with precision.

  • Lion’s EE-ONE-D Drone can hold defenders in place, giving Maverick time to cut safely.

Counters

Kaid is Maverick’s strongest counter. His Electroclaws can electrify multiple surfaces, making it difficult for Maverick to approach safely. While Bandit can also protect walls, he is more vulnerable since he must stay near them to replace wires, exposing himself to attack.

Trivia

Maverick was officially revealed on August 16, 2018. His character design reflects his time in Afghanistan:

  • He wears a Pakol, a traditional hat worn by Pashtun men.

  • He speaks Dari (referred to as Farsi in-game).

  • His tattoo depicts Afghanistan, symbolizing his connection to the region.

  • “Suri,” his torch’s name, means “red” in Dari and references a red-toned Damask rose.

Interestingly, both Maverick and Buck can speak one of Afghanistan’s two official languages, making them unique among Rainbow’s Operators.

Maverick’s Role in Siege’s Lore

Maverick represents a blend of intelligence work and field skill. His story adds realism and emotional weight to Rainbow’s narrative. Maverick's loyalty, quiet determination, and creative problem-solving make him one of the most respected Operators in the game’s lore.

His continued involvement in Ghosteyes alongside figures like Caveira and Zero shows his evolution from an isolated intelligence officer to a key player in Rainbow’s most secretive operations.
