The Dark Descent of Call of Duty’s Yuri Zavoyski
Dr. Yuri Zavoyski is one of the most complex figures in Call of Duty’s Zombies storyline. Once a Soviet scientist working on advanced research projects, his descent into madness and eventual transformation into the Pentagon Thief is rooted in manipulation, tragedy, and supernatural influence. This article unpacks Yuri’s timeline, his role in the games, and what led to his infamous status.
Early Life at the Ascension Group
Yuri Zavoyski joined the Ascension Group on October 19, 1955, alongside Dr. Anton Gersh. The Ascension Group was formed in 1946 by Harvey Yena, a former member of Group 935, and operated out of the Soviet Union. Yuri and Gersh initially collaborated on a classified effort called Project Mercury, designed to push forward scientific breakthroughs.
But by October 29, 1963, things started to unravel. Gersh believed Yuri was mentally unfit for such a high-stakes project and had him reassigned to Rocket research. That same day, Yuri began noticing toys mysteriously appearing around the facility.
Then came the voice.
Influence of Samantha Maxis
After reading a diary written by Dr. Edward Richtofen, Yuri began hearing the voice of Samantha Maxis—a girl linked to the dark forces of the Aether. Over several days, her voice consumed him. She gave him orders. He listened.
Samantha told Yuri to go back to Project Mercury. He obeyed, falling deeper into her control. On November 5, 1963, Yuri tricked Gersh into activating the Gersh Device, which ripped open a rift. Gersh was pulled into it, followed by Samantha—and finally Yuri himself.
Arrival at the Pentagon
Yuri was transported to the Pentagon, just as the Ultimis crew (Richtofen, Dempsey, Takeo, and Nikolai) arrived. Samantha used Yuri as her instrument of chaos, having him unleash the zombie outbreak contained in the facility. This led to the events seen in the Zombies map “Five” from Call of Duty: Black Ops.
The Pentagon Thief
In “Five,” Yuri appears as a special enemy known as the Pentagon Thief. Once the power is activated, he will spawn during certain rounds and attempt to steal players’ weapons.
He’s different from traditional zombies. He doesn’t directly attack players with melee damage. Instead, he targets one player at a time, teleports them and himself to the power room, and steals a weapon. If he successfully takes a weapon from every player and escapes, he drops a Max Ammo in the electricity room.
Players can fight back. If the Thief is killed before escaping, he drops Max Ammo, Fire Sale, or even Bonfire Sale, which reduces the Pack-a-Punch cost. If killed before taking any weapons, Bonfire Sale replaces Fire Sale. In co-op games, players can coordinate to kill him—often using weapons like the Ray Gun, Mustang and Sally, or Claymores. The Winter’s Howl can slow him, and Electro-Shock Defenses will instantly kill him if triggered.
His Appearance and Behavior
Yuri, as the Thief, has a distinct look. He wears a white lab coat with strange writing, thick bifocals, and carries a satchel bag. When he enters a round, the screen takes on a blue hue. He materializes from teleporters as floating red numbers, visible only to the player he targets—though others can still shoot at him.
He moves slowly at first but will sprint rapidly if seen or fired upon. This sprint is relentless; he cannot be outrun without slowing him down.
Killing the Thief requires coordination or strong firepower. One player can distract him while others attack. The Death Machine is risky to use, as he can steal it too. Though hard to kill, once defeated, he provides valuable rewards.
Detention and Interrogation
After the outbreak at the Pentagon was controlled on November 6, 1963, Yuri was captured and arrested. Leaders including John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, and Fidel Castro discussed the incident under the Broken Arrow Initiative.
From 1963 to 1965, Yuri was held in U.S. custody with little progress made through normal interrogation. In early 1965, now labeled IDENT K-642, Yuri became the first test subject in Phase Two of Project MKAlpha, a covert operation that used Element 115 and the American Pyramid Device.
He was transferred to Camp Edward, where Operation Director Cornelius Pernell took over the interrogation. Under torture, Yuri gave disturbing accounts of Samantha, Primis, Ultimis, and future zombie outbreaks, including references to the Moon, Aether, and Agartha. He mentioned an impending attack and even predicted that Pernell would play a role in it.
Eventually, the interrogation turned fatal. Yuri was tortured to death after refusing to provide the information Pernell sought.
