The competitive landscape of VALORANT is poised for a significant transformation in 2026, marked by the introduction of the Path to Champions initiative. After years of separation between Challengers and Tier 1 teams, Riot Games’ new system creates a direct route for thriving regional squads to reach the game’s highest stage, VALORANT Champions, without relying on the old Ascension format. This innovation signals a major step toward inclusivity and meritocracy in the esport.

How Path to Champions Works

From 2026 onwards, each major region in the VCT ecosystem will send four Challengers teams to its Stage 2 Playoffs. These squads will battle with established international league teams for a highly coveted place at Champions 2026 in Shanghai. The process is designed to reward success at every competitive tier and finally break down the barriers that have limited movement between levels in previous seasons.

  • Americas: North America’s and Brazil’s Challengers winners qualify directly, while two more slots are determined via a regional playoff (including a LATAM North/South decider and a last-chance qualifier featuring NA 2nd, BR 2nd, and the LATAM runner-up).
  • EMEA: Qualification comes down to cumulative points and placement across Challengers tournaments, with the top four advancing.
  • Pacific: Southeast Asia, Japan, and Korea each earn a slot, while the final position is locked in through a Last Chance Qualifier featuring South Asia, Oceania, and additional SEA seeds.
  • China: Details are forthcoming, but expect the same four-team advancement to Stage 2 Playoffs.

Financial Support and Logistics

To ensure accessibility, Riot is allocating a $75,000 stipend to every Challengers team reaching Stage 2 Playoffs. This funding is earmarked to help with travel, visa applications, and logistical expenses, making international participation realistic for organizations that have historically been limited by resources. Qualified teams will compete at regional hub venues as well as in destination playoff events on the Path to Champions.

Eligibility and Roster Rules

  • Academy Teams: Academy rosters are barred from Path to Champions, though they retain access to Challengers leagues. Their relegation protections are also being lifted in 2026.
  • Affiliate Teams: Affiliates do not need to sever ties to participate, but roster movement between main and affiliate teams is prohibited during Stage 2 Playoffs and roster lock periods for Champions.
  • Player Age: Players aged 16 or 17 can participate in Challengers and Stage 2 Playoffs, except in China, where all Playoff participants must be 18 or older.
  • Roster Composition: Teams must field a majority of players from their local region and are permitted a limited number of imports or global competitors.

The Big Picture for 2026

Riot’s overhaul stands to invigorate the competitive pyramid, giving aspiring teams and rising talents a transparent, merit-based shot at global recognition. The increased financial support and the removal of structural obstacles promise to make VCT 2026 the most open, dramatic, and competitive season yet.

For organizations, players, and fans alike, this is a turning point where dreams of reaching Champions are more achievable than ever before.
